My name is Anna and I am currently a second year veterinary student at Virginia Tech. In 2021, I graduated from University of Maryland within the top 2% of my class (Summa Cum Laude). Additionally, I majored in animal science and successfully completed the Integrated Life Sciences Honors Program. During my time at University of Maryland, I was a teaching assistant for two courses: anatomy and nutrition. I worked with students through dissections, answered questions about material, and held review sessions.

While leading review sessions, I found it most helpful to present material in an interactive way. I made Kahoot quizzes and Jeopardy games so students could practice their recall of material instead of being lectured. I also helped guide sessions by asking students about material they were confused about, so that we could spend more time on areas where they needed extra help. Being a teaching assistant really sparked my interest in teaching, and I loved working with students to help them understand material that I really cared about.

Since October, I have worked as a tutor through the veterinary school at Virginia Tech, assisting students in the year below me. This has given me an opportunity to learn about the most useful study techniques, which include quizzing yourself and teaching the material to someone else. In these sessions, I would guide students through practice cases in subjects they struggled with. I found it most helpful for them to try a practice problem on their own and then explain their thought process to me so that we could identify things they did well and areas that still needed help. Because of my educational background, I feel really confident in my scientific knowledge, especially biology and medical related topics.
