"Hello! I'm Priyanka, and I'm a junior at Boston University majoring in Chemical Biology. As someone that is looking to go into academia, I am highly passionate about STEM education. I've previously taught college students within the "General Chemistry II" course as a part of the learning assistant program (for which I was chosen among a larger group on the basis of academic performance and teaching ability). In high school, I obtained fives on AP Chemistry, AP Calculus BC, and AP Psychology, scored in the 97th percentile on the SAT, and was also recognized as a PSAT Merit Scholar. My experience in tutoring also includes working with international students on English language skills and developing lesson plans for student clubs.

I find through my experience as a learning assistant in chemistry that students learn in a multitude of ways that are unique to them. For instance, I have worked with students who prefer to draw contents in beakers to answer questions best, as well as students who prefer to think about the problem mathematically. Hence, I'm aware of how essential it is to incorporate different learning methods to help students learn new information. I also found through this experience that every student came with a different background in STEM. Whether it be setting up quadratic-equation bootcamps or working through balancing equations in class, I found it rewarding to meet students where they are at to cater to their educational needs. Hence, my approach to tutoring is interactive, supportive, and understanding. I also strongly encourage the conceptual understanding of a topic as opposed memorization based problem solving (the former of which promotes informational retrieval over a longer period of time). When working with me, a student can expect to follow the approach of being able to break a problem down to individual steps, and following an independent approach to problem solving that I can guide through thoughtful questions and prompts along the way." less...
