"Hi hi!

My name is Jack and I love helping people with math. I started tutoring 20 years ago as a community college student. I have fond memories of that room in the library basement. It was a hive of activity. Students would take a number like in a deli. It was exciting being the tutor calling out the next number, pushing the “Now serving” button, and walking over to the student with a raised hand. It was a chance to help someone, share my knowledge and experience, and connect.

Later, as a grad student, I was awarded a National Science Foundation fellowship to share advanced topics with K-12 students as part of an after-school program. Later still, as a professor, I directed our math department’s community outreach program. We created fun, interactive math activities and took them to K-12 classrooms. The students learned exponential growth by filling a tub with hundreds of ping pong balls, or about complex numbers by doing a choreographed dance. It was a lot of fun, and the feedback from students and teachers was enthusiastic.

Today I volunteer as a math tutor for incarcerated individuals and continue to create innovative ways of sharing advanced mathematical topics with a general audience. I love math and I love sharing it with others. It's a special moment when a student’s eyes light up with new understanding. When this happens, you are doing more than learning math. You are learning something about yourself and what you’re capable of.

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to meeting you!
