"Hi, I’m Mike-
I’ve been a Math teacher for over 30 years, primarily for Grades 7 thru 9, but also for Geometry and Alg. 2. I have a B.S. in Secondary Math Ed. from Southern Connecticut State Univ. as well as an M.A. Degree from Sacred Heart Univ.
In college I was frequently sought out by “friends of friends” for Math tutoring, as word had gotten out that I was someone accessible that could explain Math well. This experience made me realize that I had a gift that needed to be shared. It was one of the things that inspired me to change my major to become a teacher.
During most of my teaching career, I have tutored in the subjects of Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2 , and Geometry, (as well as Clock Arithmetic!)
I have always felt I could explain Math concepts well, and I love the feeling of having someone catch on to a concept, especially after they had experienced frustration. I enjoy relating a Math topic to something to which a student can relate (sports, food, music,..). When starting with a student in my role as a tutor, I find it most effective to have a baseline session, in order to assess their level of proficiency, as well as what type of learner they might be. Once I know which topic(s) need to be addressed, I’m able to scaffold a lesson, starting with a real-life example or analogy, in order to help the student realize that they already possess some knowledge that will be useful in learning any topic. I am then able to zero in on weaknesses or misunderstandings, guiding the student towards more independence through relevant examples, diagrams and manipulatives as needed.
I want my students to be as successful as possible; to that end I welcome any resources or suggestions parents/students might provide. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a session!" less...
