"Hello, my name is Jessie and I love math so much I went to school for it. I received my B.S. in Mathematics from Clemson University with a GPA of 3.8, and I’ve been helping students succeed in math for 8 years. I’ve learned the biggest challenge students face usually isn’t the material itself—it’s anxiety. As someone who struggled with test anxiety, I know how overwhelming a problem can look at first glance. But with a step back, a deep breath, and a strategy to break it into smaller parts, most problems become manageable (maybe even fun!).
In school, the *why* behind math often gets lost amid formulas and rigid steps. Without that understanding, math can feel frustrating or pointless. My approach is to teach both: I make sure students learn the steps they need to succeed on their tests while also helping them see the bigger picture. I adapt to each student’s goals—for some, it’s mastering the steps; for others, it’s finding new ways to approach a problem until it clicks. Above all, I aim to be a supportive, encouraging presence. Struggling doesn’t mean you’re “bad at math.” It just means you’re learning.
I live in Durham, NC with my goofy greyhound, who inspired a math education website I’m developing called “Greyhound Math.” I’m also a writer! I’ve published a horror short story and am currently writing a YA fantasy novel. I love showing my students that you don’t have to fit into just one box—you can be both imaginative and analytical.
