"Hi! My name is Cynthia and I am a Secondary Math Teacher with a Bachelor's in Mathematics (Math Ed minor) and a Master's in Education. During my undergrad work I became involved in a TRIO program for first generation students which opened up opportunities for tutoring and mentoring young adults that were the first in their families to attend college; at the start I was on the receiving end of these services and I worked my way into providing the support for others in need for the last few years at Southern Oregon University. When I wasn't tutoring, I was working through my own work in collaboration with my fellow "math-heads" in the math department student lounge. This dedication led me to graduating with my class Magna Cum Laude, and prepared me to become a better mentor to my students today!
Prior to my teaching program, I'd had a little experience in the public school setting as I was a parent to two children myself; however, the experience was geared towards younger students (elementary) and was not subject-focused. I had the honor of working with highly skilled professionals at both the middle and high school levels as a student teacher and learned to develop lessons and activities using a district curriculum. Through the years since I have increased my toolbox of engaging mathematical activities and I consciously work to guide students through the problem solving process with strategic questioning (and "self-talk").
There seems to be a lot of confusion around the study of mathematics where common-core math (curriculum) is taught. While it's a mystery to some, especially those that prefer the old-school algorithms, it was intended to build "number sense" and takes time that isn't always afforded in the classroom. What it all boils down to are patterns and discovery; which brings me back to the art of (strategic) questioning. There are many methods to the practice of mathematics..which one works best for you?" less...
