"I graduated from Cleveland State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry and Biology. Currently I work in a clinical laboratory while waiting on interviews for medical school.
Chemistry was one of the subjects I looked forward to learning since I was very little. In kindergarten I played a chemist, - toy barbershop was my laboratory, hair product bottles were reagents. To my dissapointment, my interest dissapeared after just few days of chemistry class in middle school. Subatomic particles, charges, orbitals - all seemed abstract and far from real world.
At the start of my undergraduate program I struggled in science classes as a non-native English speaker and a first-generation college student. I often doubted my abilities until months of developing study strategies finally paid off, reflected by my grades. Second half of college I near-exclusively took more science classes in attempts to improve my GPA for medical school. Consequently, my last semester I added a double major in Biology and finished it with a perfect GPA.
Re-organizing notes is another strategy that has proven itself invaluable to my academic success. Encountering a new topic I focus on refining definitions as much as possible. I “experiment” with a definition, asking myself what pieces could be omitted while retaining the main idea. I like to follow by making a concept map to relating individual topics with one another and link new material into a broad picture.
I enjoyed science sections on MCAT and found them much easier to improve than CARS, corroborated by my final score: 514 (C/P 129, CARS 124, B/B 130, P/S 131). I would love to help others studying for MCAT or otherwise needing help in undergraduate biology/chemistry courses.
