"Hi there! My name is Jay, and I'm a medical student currently on a gap year, offering tutoring in science courses for college, high school, and adult students. In 2020, I went through a 1-year accelerated pre-med program at CU, so I know what it's like to learn gen chem, o-chem, biochem, physics, prepare for the MCAT, etc.
I love helping people learn science, and I'm a firm believer that difficulty in learning scientific concepts is often the result of confusing—rather than clear and simple—language. I really do think *anyone* can learn the hard sciences well. Yes, including organic chemistry and physics! Whether you're pre-med, pre-PA, nursing etc. or just trying to pass a required course, I'd love to help you.
My experience includes tutoring General Chemistry I/II, Organic Chemistry I, Biochemistry, and Physics I/II during my application year to med school, and 1 year of high school chemistry during my post-bacc. I scored in the 95th percentile on the MCAT, and in the first 2 years of med school (Masters of Physiology equiv.) I regularly scored >90% on exams. I passed USMLE Step 1 with a high margin without needing any dedicated study time (students usually take 5-8 weeks), so I know how to learn!
Since I've taken these courses recently, not only do I still know the material deeply, but I understand what it's like to learn them for the first time, and in the context of prep for studying the health sciences—things often forgotten/underappreciated by PhDs. My approach is empathetic, peer-to-peer, methodical, and tailored. I integrate general learning and study strategies that make sense of detailed material by setting context to retain it long-term. I also coached NCAA National Championship-winning volleyball teams for several years after college, so I get the importance of progression and deliberate practice to building mastery and high performance.
Please reach out for more information and/or to see if I would be a good fit for you! I look forward to hearing from you" less...
