"My name is Jennifer, and I am currently singing in the full time ensemble at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. It is my 12th season, and has been the richest, most rewarding and challenging endeavor of my life. I have had to learn to strengthen my singing voice so that it can handle hours of singing per day. After all, the voice is made up of muscles that need to be trained and cared for, just like a professional athlete.
My journey to the Met took years. After singing all different styles of music, I decided to pursue classical music at the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music. I had a wonderful teacher who taught me never to push past the point of beauty, but always care for my instrument. I won many competitions, and studied in several European countries to solidify my languages. After I graduated, I attended the prestigious University of Michigan for a Master's degree in Voice Performance. It was here that I developed a passion for teaching healthy singing to others.
While studying for my master's, I taught a private voice studio of 12 students, all different ages, and all different styles of music. From classical to Broadway to pop, I discovered that the key to healthy longevity in singing is the SAME whatever type of music you're singing. After I graduated with my 2nd degree, I began teaching voice lessons at a local music school. My students' age range was anywhere from 8-85! I also accepted a position as an adjunct professor of voice at a university, where I prepared undergrad and graduate music major students for a life of healthy singing.
Singing is the most noble, pure and demanding pursuit in the music industry. Your body is your instrument - no keys, strings, bows. Just you, your body and your breath. How you use it can determine whether or not you sing for a few years, or for several decades. I learned from an early age the importance of healthy, whole singing." less...
