"I'm Mendel! I am a mathematician with a Bachelor's degree in math from MIT. Over the years, I've noticed the role that confidence plays in mathematical success. It is very common for people to struggle with mathematics, and often a root cause is simply a lack of familiarity and confidence. I have developed an approach where I focus on introducing a topic slowly and piece by piece, so that my students get slowly familiar with the material, and are fed bite-sized chunks which they have the ability to solve. Teaching in this way allows my students to build their abilities at a pace most appropriate for them. Going one step at a time also allows my students to understand the full picture, without throwing them into the deep end before they're ready.
I have 3 years of experience teaching for the MIT math department. Most of my students were college freshmen, and my focus was on teaching calculus. I spent the first year tutoring, the second year grading, and the third year as a TA running classroom sessions. As a tutor, I would take walk ins at the learning center, which involved questions from students taking entry level math classes. As a grader, I would grade about a hundred homeworks every week. As a TA, I led a section of 20 students, with twice weekly classroom sessions, and weekly office hours. I also spent a summer working at a math camp in Boston called PROMYS (Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists) where I graded a group of four campers, led a research group with another four, and gave lectures.
I want to do my best to teach students in the style most appropriate to them, I therefore welcome any feedback or teaching materials that students or parents have to offer. I can be easily contacted, and will respond in a timely manner. Please feel free to reach out with question or to schedule a session!" less...
