"My name is Jesse. I completed my PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Michigan. I majored in Biology for my Bachelor's degree. In graduate school, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I conducted 5 years of additional research as a postdoctoral fellow, and now I am fully focused on teaching, as a college instructor and a tutor.

I love to share my enthusiasm for science with intellectually curious, motivated students. Sharing my enthusiasm is the easy part; the challenge is to spark intellectual curiosity and find new ways to motivate students who do not yet know the extent of their capabilities or how to unlock them. In my Anatomy and Physiology courses, I use a mixture of educational approaches, including lecture and discussion, videos, physical models, drawing and sculpture exercises, laboratory experiments, and studying games. As a tutor, I focus on what students need to master so they can be successful on exams and homework assignments.

I have found that students respond well when they are listened to and treated with respect and care, approached with authenticity and good humor. I wasn't always a good student. I had to figure out effective study methods. More often than not the most successful students are those who know how to study well and take the time, consistently, to carry out their study plan. Some students don't know where to begin; they find scientific subjects overwhelming a difficult to learn. Others have an understanding of effective study skills but can't find the motivation to put in the necessary effort. I address both of these challenges.
