"Hi, I’m Michael! I graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor’s in Economics and a minor in Chinese. With over 5 years of experience working in diverse classroom settings, I specialize in tutoring middle school math, Algebra, Geometry, and ACT/SAT math test preparation. I also am fluent in Mandarin Chinese and can act as a language partner. As an experienced educator, my most fulfilling experiences have been guiding students from confusion to their “ah-hah!” moment.
As a Saga Education AmeriCorps teaching fellow, I led small-group tutorials for Algebra and Geometry high school students at a Chicago Public High school for a year. During the tutorial, I frequently asked “check-for-understanding” questions that give me a pulse on their progress. For students who needed more individualized support, I made sure to spend dedicated time to guide their learning. I believe that in addition to being a knowledgeable and prepared tutor, establishing a trusting relationship where students feel comfortable making mistakes and having fun is paramount to their success.
Furthermore, I was a Breakthrough Collaborative math teaching fellow as the lead classroom teacher for a 7th grade summer bridge program in San Jose. At Northwestern, I was a teaching assistant for the Center for Talent Development 5th-7th grade gifted math program. I was also a Jumpstart Americorps fellow supporting reading comprehension and social-emotional learning at a local pre-school classroom in Evanston, IL. Finally, I have administrative experience at the Chicago Public Schools Department of Student Assessment and studied education policy at Northwestern.
I follow a patient, personalized approach for my one-on-one tutoring sessions. I strive to develop a positive mentor relationship with my students that builds confidence and an independent problem-solving mindset. Whether it is homework help, test preparation, or getting ahead, I am dedicated to supporting the goals of my students and accelerating their success." less...
