Knowing the material is not enough—it's the art of explaining technical concepts. I have been tutoring since

graduate school. Much of my career included applications of mathematics and statistics. Explaining quantitative concepts clearly and effectively to clients and colleagues was a critical part of my work.

TUTORING PRINCIPLES

The student solves the problem. I guide the student into telling me how to solve problems, rather than laying it out at the start. Trying approaches that don’t work is an important part of the learning process.

The student holds the pencil. It is common for a student to think they can solve problems after watching someone else do it. The student must hold the pencil, most of the time.

You can’t do trigonometry if you don’t know algebra. I try to move forward and stay up with the class. But math

builds on itself. If the student doesn’t remember the material from last week, or last year, we must go back. I am always ready to delve into prior material.
