"I specialize in basic reading instruction for struggling readers including those with dyslexia. I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach and have over ten years experience teaching elementary and middle school students. I have recently added Pre-K5/kindergarten readiness to my resume. The O-G approach is a phonics based, multisensory, proven approach to teaching reading, spelling, and writing. It is specifically designed to meet the needs of dyslexic students and other struggling readers. I am trained in Project Read (a compatible program) as well. I use materials from SPIRE, All About Reading, and other compatible sources.
I also tutor math for the elementary grades. Whether I'm teaching a child math or reading skills, I strive to include interactive methods and learning games to engage the child's interest. I have plenty of experience working successfully with students with attention deficits. I use an individualized reward system to motivate each child.
Sentence and paragraph composition are included in the curriculum. Spelling instruction includes sound spelling, spelling rules, and irregularly spelled sight words. I use fun mnemonics for most short but difficult sight words (i.e., "Want has a little ant in it"). Handwriting and cursive instruction may be provided upon request. Vocabulary growth is emphasized in reading lessons.
I assess each student's needs and individualize the instruction of math skills. I utilize manipulatives for hands-on learning, use mnemonics (memory aids) for mastering math facts.
Direct, step-by-step instruction, practice to mastery, and continuous review of phonetic concepts are the cornerstone of successful phonics instruction. Instruction in the basic syllable types and syllable cutting patterns helps dyslexic readers 'break the code' of sounding out words of all sizes." less...
