"I graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Minor in Computer Science. I am currently pursuing a master's in teaching, secondary education. I have 5+ years of experience tutoring students ranging from high-schoolers to college students. My experiences tutoring high-school ACT prep at Huntington Learning Center and college-level math and computer science courses at the university tutoring center have prepared me to ensure students' success through a variety of challenges.
Adaptability is a skill I honed during my years tutoring at the UTK Vol Study Center; I led sessions in over 15 different courses. I believe one of the most important aspects of tutoring is being aware that every student has their own strengths and weaknesses. To successfully tutor over 20 students per week, each in different courses, you must be able to think on the fly while also mastering course knowledge in a broad range of subjects. During my time at the Vol Study Center, I had tutored over 500 students; because of this, I am confident in both my knowledge of mathematics as well as my capabilities in teaching.
In particular, I feel confident in my ability to create a comfortable yet challenging learning environment. Many times, students feel frustrated or overwhelmed with course material, so addressing these feelings is an essential skill for a tutor. I aim to maximize the amount of student engagement during our sessions by asking check-in questions frequently, or by having the student walk me through a practice problem. I have found that these methods help prevent the student from feeling unmotivated or overwhelmed. It is very important to me that students feel like they can succeed." less...
