"I'm creative, thoughtful, and patient, with over 30 years' experience in early childhood, elementary, and adult education. I earned a Master of Arts degree in Applied Linguistics at UMass Boston in 2015 and a certificate in "ESL math pedagogy". My undergraduate studies included nutrition and life sciences, African history and literature, children's literature, Spanish, and a concentration in studio art: drawing and painting. With 20 years’ experience as a home-school parent and as a teaching artist, I often search "outside the box" for creative ways to strengthen students' confidence and independence.
I tutor students mostly at public libraries or online, and offer learner-centered support in reading, writing, elementary math, and various subjects that include applied life-science, social studies, functional art, yoga, movement, and theatre. I also have over 16 years’ experience teaching pre-GED math, science, reading, writing, and ESOL/ESL to adults.
In summary: I am an education specialist, working with English Language Learners and Native Speakers of English. I offer learner-centered basic academic support and "meaning-making" to students at all age levels, but I work most frequently with adults. My approach includes: conversation, role-playing, journaling, reading aloud (solo or shared), book-walk previews, and consideration of multicultural traditions, music, and literature. My hobbies include print-making, poetry readings, walking in rural and urban nature, and recognizing many native plants, insects, and other wildlife." less...
