"I am a Master of Fine Arts graduate from the University of San Francisco, a college graduate from New York University, and have been a teaching assistant (TA) for two undergraduate writing courses as well as a tutor for elementary to high school students. I have also been a teacher at the Institute of Reading Development and Sing in Chinese Language School. In total, I have been teaching for 9 years.
As a TA, I have participated in class discussions, given feedback to students for their writings and presentations, and contributed fresh ideas to the curriculum. Besides that, I have taught reading both virtually and in-person to students from kindergarten to high school levels in a summer reading program. I have also tutored students one-on-one and in groups for a variety of subjects, including English, reading, writing, Mandarin, and Math. I enjoy inspiring them to further their learning beyond the classroom with an engaging and innovative teaching style that can include games, songs, and a wide range of tried-and-tested study strategies. I also effectively manage class behaviors through natural consequences and positive reinforcement instead of punitive measures. With my support, I have had both elementary and high school students whose grades improved from D and even E to Grade A in English, Math, and Mandarin.
As a teacher, I am most of all driven by a desire to genuinely connect with students of varying temperaments, abilities, and personalities, and to instill in them a growth mindset and confidence to go after their goals. I believe that my relationship with students has lifelong consequences. Therefore, I make sure to tailor my approach based on individual needs and adapt my teaching to suit their learning styles. Besides helping them achieve their present academic goals, I also aim to improve their overall relationship with the subjects at hand and with learning as a whole, so they can become intrinsically motivated lifelong learners. I believe in the potential of each and every student." less...
