"Hi, I am Melissa! I graduated cum laude from California State University, Fullerton in 2017 with a Bachelor's degree in Health Science. Throughout my educational career I have taken several child development classes that have contributed to my teaching methods. These classes along with years of experience have helped me understand that every child learns differently, therefore teaching methods must be adapted for each individual student. In addition to private tutoring, I also have over 10 years of tutoring experience with Kumon Math and Reading. While at Kumon, I worked with 1-2 students at a time in both early math and reading foundational skills for students between the ages of 3 and 8. The skills focused on during these sessions were letter and sound recognition, penmanship, reading, spelling, comprehension, number recognition, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I have numerous techniques that I incorporate to teach each skill successfully, including worksheets, flashcards, number and alphabet boards, games and much more. I have worked with a range of learners, including students that are above, below, and at expected age level, and have experience is assessing students' abilities and finding the perfect level for the child.

I believe that it is important to utilize different teaching approaches to ensure the child is enjoying what they are learning. I do not move on to the next lesson until I am certain that my student is comfortable and confident with the current skill. I am constantly thinking of new and creative ways to involve my students with the subject. I enjoy incorporating reward systems so that my students are encouraged to continue their hard work. It is very important to me that I always keep an open communication between myself and the family, which has shown beneficial for the learning habits of the student.
