"I am a Board Eligible genetic counselor with a master's degree in genetic counseling from the University of Connecticut. My current role as a genetic counselor allows me to provide empathetic, psychologically empowering information about complex medical and scientific concepts daily. This translates into my work as a tutor, where I help students to excel in their coursework and feel confident in their ability to apply content in novel ways. My background at the University of Missouri, where I earned my bachelor's of science in biochemistry is where I truly found my love of teaching that has stuck with me to now. Throughout my undergraduate education and graduate training I honed my skills as a science communicator, including peer tutoring for biochemistry courses and professional tutoring for many science subjects.
As a tutor, I have been able to use my advanced knowledge of genetics and related medical conditions to help students make meaning of seemingly abstract scientific concepts and find success in their coursework. Utilizing student-led tutoring sessions, through asking questions and starting with what the student does know, sets me apart from other tutors. I engage in active listening to support students better in a way that is more effective than lecturing at them. I also have experience working with younger students in my volunteer work and have learned the power of adaptability and working with the student and their families to best achieve their goals. I am always open to suggestions, resources, and constructive feedback to suit the student's needs. I look forward to working with you!" less...
