"Hi, I'm Emily! Nice to meet you! I have a B.A. in English/Creative Writing and Literature from Hofstra University and a TEFL/TESOL certification from International TEFL Academy to teach English to non-native speakers. I had the opportunity to use this certification in Japan, where I spent three years teaching children at an after school English immersion program. During that time, I saw amazing transformations in the way these students were able to communicate. Ones being exposed to English for the first time were able to write me goodbye notes when I left! After returning home, I worked at a public school as the 4th grade ESL teacher with the sweetest children. Having previously led combined classrooms of more than 40 students and small groups with just a handful, I can say that it’s much more gratifying to work in a one-on-one online setting.
My ultimate goal is to create a safe space for my students to be themselves. One of the main benefits of being able to focus my attention on a single student is the ability to learn of their interests so that I can integrate their likes into more engaging sessions. I have a laid-back approach to teaching because I want to foster a comfortable learning environment. I find it easy to relate to students to see their personalities shine. Even the shyest first-grader now can’t wait to tell me all about the books he reads at home!
My strengths lie in the areas of writing, given my lifelong enthusiasm for the written word. I am most interested in continuing to tutor the subjects of creative writing, essay writing/proofreading/editing, and application essays. Finding the right words to transfer ideas from brain to page can be quite challenging. I'm confident that my experience editing an array of writing styles can assist students in expressing their ideas accurately. My current students range from elementary level through adults, so everyone is welcome here!
