"Hello! I’m Mami, a violin and Japanese language teacher based in New York. I was born and raised in Tokyo and moved to New York in 2000. Since then, I’ve been passionate about sharing both the beauty of Japanese culture and the joy of music with students of all ages and backgrounds.

As a Japanese teacher, I completed the Japanese Language Teacher Training Program at Japan Society NYC in 2019 and later worked there as an assistant instructor. With over 13 years of teaching experience, I work with students ranging from children to professionals preparing for business communication or the JLPT. My lessons are flexible and tailored to each learner’s goals, focusing on conversation, pronunciation, and confidence in real-life communication. I also introduce cultural elements—such as expressions, customs, and etiquette—to make each class engaging and meaningful. Lessons are available both online and in person.

As a violin instructor, I began studying at age six through the Suzuki Method and later trained under Haruo Katayama, former principal second violinist of Japan’s New Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 2012, I have been teaching violin in New York, working with beginners as well as advanced players. My lessons focus on building solid technique, musical understanding, and self-expression, while maintaining an encouraging and positive environment. Lessons can take place online, at the student’s home, or in professional studios in Manhattan such as Michiko Rehearsal Studio, 353, or 757 Studios. (Studio rental fees are covered by the student.)

Lesson rates vary depending on level, location, and lesson type, and trial sessions are available for new students who would like to experience my teaching style before starting regular lessons.
