"Numeracy is just as essential as literacy. Managing personal finances, understanding polling results, cooking and party planning, understanding sale prices after a percentage discount, making plans and constructing a sleeping platform so you can camp in your SUV, navigating information and decisions about your health, everywhere we turn we see math. (And if you want to pursue a career in engineering, medicine, etc., you’ll be using it every day!) Math is essential for navigating life, and it can seem difficult and scary, but it doesn’t have to be.
As an International Baccalaureate and Ivy League graduate, experienced math classroom teacher and tutor, statistics/risk management consultant to governments and businesses around the world, and trained meditation instructor, I possess a unique combination of knowledge, skills, and presence that I love using to help people understand, succeed in, feel confident with, and maybe even grow to love, mathematics.
Math is a language and way of thinking that, like any language, takes practice and persistent effort to master. But I deeply believe in your ability to grow and want to partner with you in that process. I’ve made math topics clear and comprehensible for hundreds of students and would be grateful for a spot on your team.
Research is slowly gathering evidence for the powerful impact meditation can have on mathematics anxiety. Mindfulness meditation gives us the ability to sit with whatever is arising, to stay in calm relationship with it — what a cool skill to be able to have when we encounter a math problem! (To say it more nerdily, meditation may enhance cognitive and emotional resilience in the face of mathematical stressors.) To keep our cool when presented with mathematical challenges, even the ones that ask us to really stretch what we know, makes learning possible.
Partner with me, let’s sit and look at it, keep our cool, and grow together." less...
