"I decided to become a tutor because of my passion for education and my desire to pass that knowledge on to others. During my time as an undergraduate, I assisted my peers with developing effective learning strategies to improve their understanding of various subject matter. I believe this is very important and helpful because everyone has a different method of learning and creating a learning strategy helps to accomplish an adequate understanding of the subject matter. I received a B.S. in Psychology with a concentration in Neuroscience from The Pennsylvania State University in August 2013. Because of my love of English and Biology, I have decided to return to school and am currently pursuing a B.A. In Biology with minors in Chemistry and Professional Writing at CUNY Lehman College.
During my time as an undergraduate at The Pennsylvania State University,I worked at a mentoring program where I tutored first semester college students in English and bioethics. My specialties include biology, English, and history; however, my experience as an after school counselor at the Police Athletic League where I tutored elementary school children has allowed me to become well-versed in K-6 education. My typical tutoring session would consists of an in-depth subject review, practice questions to reinforce knowledge, and a homework assignment to ensure the student is retaining all learned information. My tutoring philosophy is to make learning fun; therefore, I try to incorporate student interests into the lessons. This method of tutoring was especially helpful during my time at the Police Athletic League.
The first time meeting with a student would be a consultation to assess the student's strengths and weaknesses, which will allow me to tailor a learning plan to the child's specific learning style and needs.
I have a 24-hr cancellation policy on all sessions; however, I can be flexible and will allow make-up sessions. Lastly, I ask that the student/parents provide me with feedback as I value your opinions and will use them" less...
