"Most of my tutor/teaching experience comes from helping my kids with their homework at the Extended Student Services (ESS) expanded learning program. Most of them ranged from first to third grade but I would sometimes be put in charge of a group of 5-6 graders when we were short staffed. Many of my kids had ADHD, behavioral issues, and in some cases could not read yet. Homework time was typically conducted in a group setting, presenting unique challenges which taught me how to cater to the needs of each individual.
Despite these obstacles, I always found immense joy and fulfillment in helping these children grow academically and personally. One of my most rewarding experiences came from me teaching a girl how to read. She was already part of the way there and through consistent encouragement, tailored strategies, and practice she was able to not just do her homework but understand it on her own by the time she entered the third grade the next year. The day she excitedly came up to me beaming with pride at the fact that she was a fully fledged reader was unforgettable. Moments like this continued to reaffirm my passion for working with children and helping them overcome their challenges.
In addition to this, I emphasized creating a positive and nurturing environment where students felt encouraged to come up to me, ask questions, or simply just show me something cool they found. My approach involved breaking down tasks into manageable steps so that it was easier to maintain productive focus and celebrating smaller victories to build confidence. My experiences so far have shaped my teaching philosophy to highlight catering to the needs of the individual and deepened my commitment to fostering growth in every student I have the pleasure of working with." less...
