"**Projects for students interested in Artificial Intelligence and Health Care beginning August**
This summer and in Aug-November, I am teaming up with a Machine learning professional to develop exciting science projects for students. Here is a synopsis: This 8 weeks course (August-October) provides the necessary foundation to do an Artificial Intelligence project. It is meant for high schoolers planning to do AI-based bio apps in their junior/senior year, as their extra-curricular projects. In this course, the students will learn the nuts and bolts of Deep Learning and the various applications of AI, how it can be used for diagnosis of health conditions based on automated image analyses. We will also introduce the architecture and algorithms. The students will work on 3 actual problems in a group - diagnosing breast cancer from biopsy samples of 700 women based on 9 features. This problem has been simplified by already assigning the appropriate weights to the classifiers. However, students will still learn how to construct the Neural network and tweak the conditions to increase efficiency of prediction. In the second more complex problem, students will use computer vision to correctly identify the type of human blood cell from a sample of several different cells in whole blood. This is an open challenge on Kaggle and students will have an opportunity to compare their algorithms with the solutions submitted by advanced researchers. In the third problem, students will use a neural network to diagnose the severity of Diabetic retinopathy (a type of blindness) from patient eye (retina) images. We are trying to give them a feel for the process rather than mire them with the complicated math and computation. By the conclusion of this course, students will be ready to write about their insights from these projects in their college essays or take up related, independent projects. This is meant to be a class for only 4 or 5 selected students to maximize interaction with the instructors and their peers. This course is" less...
