"Hello! My name is Dr. DaNae W., and I hold a Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry with over 12 years of experience in scientific research. During my postdoctoral training, I was an Institutional Career and Research Development Award (IRACDA) fellow for three years where I received rigorous pedagogical training focused on effective and inclusive teaching practices that promote active learning. I have taught college-level courses including Cell Biology and Human Anatomy at San Diego State University, and Introductory Neuroscience at the University of California, San Diego. I have also taught General Biology and Practical Research classes to Grade 12 students at the Central Visayan Institute Foundation in the Philippines. I am passionate about helping students succeed by strengthening understanding and making complex concepts approachable.
My tutoring approach is highly structured and personalized to each student’s needs. By breaking down challenging topics into clear, manageable steps and connecting concepts to real-world examples, I aim to help students see the relevance of biology in both everyday life and academic settings. I also believe that art and science go hand in hand, so I often use hands-on tools such as drawings or my crocheted biology models, to make abstract concepts and tangible and memorable. Whether a student is working through homework, preparing for exams, or seeking a deeper understanding of biological topics, I focus on creating a supportive learning environment where questions are encouraged, misconceptions are addressed with care, and progress is achievable.
My goal is to help students at every stage of their education not only improve academically, but also develop confidence, critical thinking, and a genuine curiosity and appreciation for science. I look forward to working with both high school and college students to help them reach their academic goals and enjoy the process of learning biology." less...
