"Hello! I'm Lauren. Currently, I'm a PhD candidate in musicology, and I also hold a master's in musicology and a bachelor's in English and music (summa cum laude).
My time in academia has given me teaching experience both in a classroom setting and one-on-one. As a teaching assistant, I saw firsthand how essential it is for an instructor to be approachable, patient, and compassionate in addition to being a master of the material. Now, as a graduate instructor, I try to bring these values into my own teaching in college courses in the humanities and music history. Additionally, I've worked as a writing consultant in my graduate institution's writing center for two years and in my undergraduate writing center for four. In this one-on-one consulting, I pride myself on my ability to empower students to develop strategies to improve their own writing. My sense of humor and sincere desire to connect with students have helped me immensely in making these sessions productive and mutually rewarding. Furthermore, my work with undergraduates, graduate students, non-native speakers, and students with disabilities has improved my ability to build relationships with students from diverse backgrounds.
My dual background in English and music makes me an asset to students hoping to improve their writing, thinking, and analytical skills in a variety of subjects. As a PhD candidate nearing the end of my degree, I have extensive experience with academic writing, and I can assist students with brainstorming, flow, clarity, and style as well as grammar and mechanics. I can also tutor in specialized topics in music. For music history, I use a lesson plan, but for writing help, I prefer a more organic approach: I like to read through the paper in advance of our meeting if possible, and then again with the student. My hope is that our work together will give my students confidence to fix their writing themselves. Please feel free to reach out to me to schedule a lesson if you think we would be a good fit!" less...
