"Dear Students and Parents,
I’m something of an academic with a passion for teaching and tutoring. I got my Associate’s degree with honors in math from Ful-Mont Community in 2003, my Bachelor’s in math from Stony Brook U in 2006, my Master’s in astrophysics with a 3.7 GPA from San Diego State in 2014, and my PhD in astrophysics from Swinburne Tech in Australia in 2019. While studying I tutored undergrad math in tutoring centers at Ful-Mont and Swinburne for 4 years. I taught Astronomy and Astro labs for 2 years at San Diego State, and Aviation Math and Essential Math at Swinburne for 2 years. I also led a summer math bridging program at Swinburne for incoming students in need of review.
I’ve also taught and tutored outside of academia. I taught middle school math at Escuela Popular in San Jose from 2006-2008, and for the past 6 years I’ve tutored 2nd-12th graders for Mathnasium. At Mathnasium we work with kids behind, kids ahead, and some with special needs such as autism.
I’ve always used the Socratic method of teaching by questioning. I find as students learn to verbalize their confusion, their recognition of fundamental concepts improves along with their confidence. Once I know what they are asking, I break the concept down until it makes sense to the student and they can explain it themselves. Then I cement it in with examples and guided practice. Along the way we practice good habits like showing work clearly to improve future learning.
