"I'm Andrew! I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor's and Master's in Mathematical Sciences. I am currently in my third year of a PhD in mathematics at Cornell University. Since high school, I have tutored students of all levels in multiple fields of math. In college I worked as a teaching assistant in a wide variety of classes spanning introductory-level and upper-level classes, many in Discrete Math. Having written my Master’s thesis in analysis, I also have a strong grasp on the fundamentals of Calculus. These experiences have given me insight into how students learn and retain material in dramatically different ways and I incorporate this into how I tutor by individualizing my teaching methods to each student.
I also worked as a peer leader under the SI (Supplemental Instruction) model for two years. The SI model has been shown to improve student understanding and retention in courses traditionally considered ‘difficult’; in my sessions, I implement the techniques I learned as an SI leader. This includes creating lesson plans according to cognition based educational models, identifying student weaknesses before, during, and after lessons, and using previous meetings to improve and adapt future lessons for the individual.
In high school, I achieved an 800 on the math section of the SAT as well as a 36 on the ACT. I was also an active participant in math competitions, competing annually in the AMC and AIME and qualifying for the USAJMO in 10th grade. During college, I continued my interest in competition math by taking the Putnam exam and contributing to CMU’s very own CMIMC, a math competition for high schoolers.
As a tutor my primary goal is to teach you how to learn math. Understanding the course material can only get you so far; my hope is to instill a mathematical mindset that will transform the way you approach the subject. By doing so, you will not only master the material but also learn how to approach math in the future." less...
