"I’m a Biostatistics PhD student at NYU Langone Health, with a BA in Chemical Biology and an MPH from Case Western Reserve University. My academic background gives me a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, and mathematics, along with the experience to support students preparing for standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, and GRE. While most of my experience is with middle school and older students, I enjoy working with learners of all ages.

My passion for teaching actually began in high school when I worked as a karate instructor! I taught students ranging from toddlers to adults, helping them build confidence in a discipline that can be intimidating, especially for beginners and younger students. This early experience taught me how critical it is to create a safe and supportive environment, and how much students can achieve when nudged outside their comfort zones with care and patience.

In college, I built on this foundation as a Supplemental Instructor in Organic Chemistry (a subject often more daunting than martial arts!). I led twice-weekly sessions with students in the course, designed custom worksheets that forced students to engage critically with the lecture material, and completed formal coursework in pedagogy. This role and the associated coursework cemented my teaching philosophy that students learn best in what we call the “zone of proximal development”: when they’re challenged just beyond their comfort zone, but supported enough to persevere and eventually succeed. This method not only helps understand the material better, but also develops their confidence in their own abilities.

To accomplish this, at the core of my approach is creating a respectful, encouraging learning space where students feel comfortable taking risks and learning from mistakes. I prioritize getting to know each student’s unique strengths and challenges to tailor my support accordingly. As a tutor, my goal is not just academic improvement, but to help students grow into independent, confident, and resilient learners." less...
