I'm Dr. Alan, a college professor with a heart. I have 20 years of teaching/tutoring experience in helping students from ages 10 to 70, from middle school to graduate school. I am the author of four teaching guides and I regularly publish essays, short stories, and film reviews. I not only tutor the SAT and ACT, I have worked for test development companies, so I know how these tests are constructed. I can give you five tips on how to improve your test scores in the first lesson, or better yet, just ask me! I even edited a test preparation book on studying for the SSAT!

So what do I do during a tutoring session? I assess what challenges you have. I try to think like the student. I 'become' him or her and figure out what is the best way to improve academic or professional work. One size DOESN'T fit all. I treat you as an individual with your own way of thinking and learning.

A good tutor listens to a student's issues, understands how the student perceives a subject, and gets a grasp of the particular problems she or he may have. By learning WHY a student is having difficulties, a tutor should develop an individualized student plan, so that the student can eventually tutor himself or herself.

I also have a Certificate in Counseling Psychology, so I can help develop learning strategies for students that don't fit neatly into a typical student profile, for example, those with ADHD or dyslexia.
