"Greetings! My name is Christopher R. I am currently a PhD candidate in philosophy at University of Dallas in Irving, Texas. I have an MA in philosophy from the same school. I have over ten years of teaching experience in academia and eleven years of experience as a vocal coach. I have tutored adults of various ages in writing, English and philosophy and have taught philosophy to undergraduates at University of Dallas. I have also taught language arts, voice, drama, and social studies to youth spanning from grades 2 through 8 at St. John Paul II Catholic School in Southern Pines, North Carolina.
My areas of expertise in philosophy include Plato, Aristotle, St. Thomas Aquinas, Immanuel Kant, and Edmund Husserl. I have taught the phenomenology of Husserl to undergraduates at University of Dallas. My coursework in the history of philosophy has spanned from the Pre-Socratics through contemporary philosophers. I have taken classes on metaphysics, history of philosophy, ethics, epistemology, and phenomenology.
My teaching methodology encompasses using creative examples from anything from the fairy tales of Hans Christian Anderson and J.R.R. Tolkien to my work on a framing crew. I believe that structure is very important for an effective learning environment, but I also have found that occasional spontaneity is helpful. I do not think that learning should be reserved to reading and writing--although they are indispensable elements of it--but that it should extend to our experiences in the everyday world. Thus, I encourage my students to take occasional breaks from their studies and get outdoors to learn from the beauty of nature or to partake of tasks that go beyond the classroom like volunteering at a soup kitchen or learning how to run a small business. I believe that a great education must inform the whole human person and not just teach him particular skills.
However, I have strong competency in many other subjects, including singing, drama, theology, Bible studies and French." less...
