"Hi! I am a PhD student in physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara researching quantum phenomena. Knowing that I study a pretty esoteric field, I am extremely passionate about making STEM accessible, and demystifying subjects that have a tendency to be presented as daunting. I have over eight years of experience tutoring high school and college students in math and physics.
I earned my Bachelor’s degree in physics at Barnard College, the historically women’s college of Columbia University. There, I minored in German and filled my extra time with studio art classes. I was awarded the Henry A. Boorse Prize in Physics when I graduated. Then, in a research gap year before starting my PhD, I served as a Lab Instructor at Barnard leading physics labs for first-year students. From my own learning experiences, I love breaking down theoretical concepts so that they feel graspable. I’ve learned how to make the seemingly obscure ideas often found in math and physics feel more logical and applicable to real life. My teaching philosophy centers on the idea that effective teaching requires patience, and an understanding of each student’s unique needs.
Thanks to my liberal arts education, I also have strong writing skills across a wide range of contexts. I am experienced in writing application essays—successfully gaining admission to undergraduate and PhD programs—and have extensive experience in scientific writing necessary to communicate research. I am also a National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellow and have experience writing successful fellowship applications.
Outside of teaching and working on my research, I love SCUBA diving, aerial arts and dance, and traveling. I also enjoy participating in local outreach with high school students in the Santa Barbara/Ventura/Oxnard area.
I’ve been fortunate to study with many inspiring teachers and know how influential a great instructor can be. I’m excited to help others find success in achieving their goals." less...
