"I am a Chemistry PhD student at the University of St Andrews; I studied biology and chemistry there as an undergraduate, earning a first-class degree with honors (highest possible grade in UK).
I have been a tutor for six years, working with middle and high school students on a range of subjects, but specialising in chemistry, biology and mathematics.
As a product of US state schools, I am well-qualified to teach and offer insights into the curricula and testing: studying on my own, I scored a 1580 on the SAT, 5s in all my AP exams, and a 39 on my IB diploma. I have tutored US high-school students in AP BC Calculus, AP Biology, AP Government, Honours Chemistry, French and English. I've also taught at a school in Kenya, preparing students aged 7-17 for exams in sciences, maths and English.
Sciences and maths can seem daunting and confusing, but how one learns these subjects can make a world of difference. My experiences learning in high school and university prompted me to consider how to teach effectively: to rationalise new concepts, clarify ambiguities and develop students' skills.
I've found it highly effective to introduce new content by "relearning" the subject with my students--building up logically from the fundamentals--and then setting them practice problems to reinforce their understanding and confidence. I leave time to discuss their questions and to make connections beyond the material, challenging them to solve problems and put their knowledge in context.
To reach these goals, I prepare lessons in advance, but I am keenly aware that everyone thinks and learns differently.
I've taught several students with ADHD and can easily adapt my methods to suit them. To that end, I welcome feedback and suggestions that will help us work together. If you have any questions, as a parent or student, do get in touch with me, and I'll be happy to answer them." less...
