"Greetings y'all!
In college, I became a private tutor who enjoyed helping students get better grades and feel more confident in academia. This was mainly because, while I managed to achieve all A's in my classes, I had to really study for hours on end after school and at night because I wasn't able to understand much at all when I was in class. Even though I graduated at the top of my year (rank 3 out of 500+), I sacrificed a lot of my time outside of school to do so while my classmates were able to enjoy their after school hours - whether it be in extracurriculars like sports or music, working a part-time job, playing video games, or just having fun and creating memories with their friends.
But why is this the case? In school, teachers are unable to personalize lesson plans since they have to teach 10, 20, 30+ kids at the same time. Not to mention, they have to teach their curriculum within a set amount of time because there's a set amount of material they have to get through before the next state/county standardized test and before the students graduate. The education system is not perfect, and I believe all these reasons contribute to why so many students fall behind in school, or at least feel like they do.
And so one of my primary motivators for teaching now, is to help current students, who like me, learn more effectively in an one-on-one setting so that they can individually focus on the concepts that they're struggling on or are actually important (because textbooks love to add fluff). Lots of my mentees in the past have appreciated how I broke down problems step by step and explained concepts in my own personal way that actually made sense, not having to rely on pure memorization anymore.
Now, after 5 years of in-person tutoring work, I decided to try teaching on Wyzant to further my motivation to teach students so that they can feel confident in their academic knowledge and enjoy their time at school and more importantly (because school is not everything), outside of it.
