"Hello! My name is Kathy. I have been teaching kids to read for over 30 years. I began my career in 1992 as a Kindergarten teacher, and have since taught Grades K-3, and was awarded Oakland County Teacher of the Year in 2008! I have served as a teacher leader, early literacy coach, and district literacy specialist. But the work that has brought me the most JOY has always been sitting side-by-side with students, coaching them as readers and writers!

When I started teaching, I knew I needed more expertise on how to teach reading, so I went back to school and earned my Master's Degree in Reading in 1997. Since then, I have never stopped learning and growing my practice. Recently, I spent two years completing LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling), which opened my eyes to the Science of Reading and the latest research on how children learn to read. This inspired me to pursue certification as a Reading Therapist through the Orton Gillingham Academy (which has involved over 70 hours of coursework and 100 practicum hours with an OG Fellow).

I am very passionate about literacy and my life's calling is helping children of all ages and skill levels develop strong reading and writing skills. I believe that one-on-one, personalized instruction can be life-changing for children who may be struggling with these skills. The Orton-Gillingham method is multisensory, and highly structured to ensure your child is successful!

The process begins with an assessment of your child's reading and spelling skills, so that I can design a scope & sequence of lessons to meet their specific learning needs. We then follow that scope and sequence, moving at your child's own pace, ensuring they master each skill before moving on.
