My approach to tutoring is to help the student to let go of their old stories of being intimidated or "bad at math,"and instead, develop a gentle curiosity. We focus on concepts first. Once we have discussed a concept, then we can delve into calculations, applications, and connections with other concepts. My goal is to help students develop their intuitions in math, which will help them understand the larger picture of the subject, making future math (and science) classes more accessible.

ELEMENTARY (counting, patterns, money, adding and subtracting, multiplying and dividing, word problems, etc.) For my younger students (ages 5 to 9) I recommend meeting for only 30 to 45 minutes at time. Older and more mature students may go up to an hour. My goal as a tutor is to keep things fun while cementing fundamentals.
MIDDLE SCHOOL (Fundamentals, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry) Many students struggle to transition from the elementary format to the middle school format. A period of math can simultaneously be too long to keep a student engaged and too short to provide a student with a clear understanding of the day's lesson. In middle school, math classes are more rigorous and demanding than what students are used to. And the math knowledge and study skills acquired in middle school will help (or hurt) the student as he or she moves on through high school. My goals as a tutor are to help my students make sense of this new way of doing school and to lay the foundation for the years to come.
HIGH SCHOOL (Fundamentals, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus)* For some students, high school is the first time they have ever struggled with math. These students are not used to asking for help, but it is a crucial strategy for them to practice (especially if college-bound). For o" less...
