"Hello! I am a retired high school AP English Language and Composition teacher. I developed the AP English Language program at Charlottesville High School and served as the academic competition team and newspaper sponsor, as well as department chairperson, during my tenure. I have taught at Piedmont Virginia Community College as well. In addition, I am a College Board consultant for AP English Language and Composition and have taught both new and experienced teachers at AP Summer Institutes for the past two decades. I have extensive training in the new essay rubrics and Course and Exam Description for AP English Language. Currently, I am a part-time application reader for the University of Virginia Undergraduate Admissions Department. I also have copy editing experience and have extensive experience in creating content for several major textbook publishers (both in editing, development of multiple choice questions, and crafting teacher manuals for AP English Language textbooks).
I am interested in helping students improve their college essays, tweak their writing, and hone their editing skills. I am also a strong, capable proofreader and enjoy reading theses and dissertations on any topics. I prefer working with high school, college, and graduate students, but I would also consider tutoring middle school students. I look forward to working with you!
I know what teachers are looking for. I understand the concept of audience. I have strong attention to detail. I hold a double major in English and philosophy and a master of arts degree in English language and literature. This combination of both educational credentials and extensive training/experience in undergraduate admissions gives me a unique perspective. Working with the school newspaper for almost 30 years has given me lots of practice in proofreading as well!
