"I am approaching my 77th birthday and want to continue to use what I have achieved to help others progress in their education. I am married with three college educated children. I earned degrees in biology and microbiology and then trained in pathology after medical school. I spent 20 years In the U.S. Navy Medical Corps and had multiple tours at Navy Hospitals. After retiring from clinical practice, I taught gross anatomy and hematology to physician assistant students.
The cadaver laboratory is a stressful environment for most students. My approach was to make their experience as relaxed as possible. I encouraged the students to help each other academically and emotionally while demanding academic excellence and integrity. I remember the stresses of rigorous courses. I could not make the courses I taught easier, but I felt they would learn more if I could make them feel more at ease in class. I was proud of the Faculty Excellence Award that I received from my first semester anatomy students.
Since retirement from pathology, I have pursued mathematics as a personal challenge. I have used that in a volunteer tutoring program for public school students in Washington, DC. Many of those students have had difficult backgrounds with unstable home environments. I focused on understanding their lives and visions for the future. I tried to quickly assess their base of knowledge so we could progress from that. With all students, I feel that I have learned from them as well as what I have been able to teach in class or in a tutoring session. My encounters with students have been a rewarding part of my retirement. I hope to expand that experience in tutoring young people through Wyzant.
I am proficient in algebra 1 and have skills in algebra 2 and trigonometry. My career in the Navy may be of help to those students who may be looking to do well on the enlistment exam for a military assignment. I am familiar with the content of the ASVAB exam." less...
