"The SAT and ACT are, at their heart, fascinating games, and there is nothing I love more than diving deep into a game with someone and helping them discover both their weaknesses and the strategies with which to overcome them. I also am particularly excited about my work with lower scoring students. Finding the unique way they might connect to a topic, showing them how much these tests are like a game you can beat with the right strategy, or just seeing that lightbulb go off as a tough content topic finally clicks after years of frustration… it all reaffirms why I do this.
When I teach, I try to put a focus on flexibility, both in my own approach but also for the student. Not every kid will know the exact right mathematical way to approach every question, the perfect rule for each situation, and though I help them learn those ideas, it can all be overwhelming. I have worked with so many students, especially those whose education was affected by the pandemic, who struggle to recall the basics. This means that I need a half-dozen different ways to approach these questions. I began as a National Merit Scholar myself, but I have still worked hard over the years to be able to get a perfect 1600 and 36 on these tests. After 8 years of full time tutoring, I know every piece of the puzzle inside and out, so I can always find the weird method that might connect better with any unique student.
When I was getting my degree in Psychology from Colby College, I had a particular focus on learning, memory, and cognition. I have also taught chess in the past, strategy-based video games, and was a camp counselor for many years, helping young children learn rock climbing and other active sports.
