"SCHF is a 12-week philosophical laboratory that uses MMO (Mass Multiplayer Online Games) to help students better understand philosophical theories in ethics and aesthetics. This lab initiative aligns with instruction in two ways. It explores how virtual environments powered by complex algorithms, can be used to shape moral reasoning and develop character virtues inside game environments.
When combined with carefully selected reading materials, game environments can double as thought experiments modeled. Actively creating thought experiments helps us understand philosophical theories. In the same way that a student can dissect a frog in a biology lab and obtain a greater understanding of the digestive system, we believe that a student can dissect a series of human interactions in a virtual philosophy lab and obtain a greater understanding of various ethical and philosophical principles.
In examining philosophical questions through active game play, we can bridge theoretical philosophy with practical applications such as critical and moral reflection, and philosophical analysis. If you are interested in being a part of this exciting project, send me a message." less...
