"I am a science teacher with 5 years of experience with three advanced degrees; a Bachelors degree in Biology, a Masters in Biomedical Science, and a Masters in the Art of Teaching. Over my five years of teaching I have taught a variety of topics at the high school level such as Biology, Physical Science, and AP Environmental Science. In the fall I will be teaching Anatomy and Physiology. I have also taught Biology online at the college level in the past.
My instructional strategies depends on the context and the need of my students. For large group sessions I will go over content as a general overview and utilize review questions to reinforce and check the students understanding of the content. I will also utilize the time to allow students to ask specific questions for clarification. In a smaller group it will depend on the needs of the individuals and the subject. For courses like Anatomy, Biology, and AP Environmental Science I focus on clarifying confusing content by using different analogies or diagrams to help students develop a better understanding of the content. For classes like Physical Science or Chemistry that involves calculations I use the I do, we do, you do method for the math. I will do an example for my students, have them verbally walkthrough an example, and then have them solve a problem on their own.
Due to teaching high school students I also have put a lot of emphasis on test taking strategies with my students on a regular basis. The main concept I reinforce with my students is process of elimination. A large majority of questions on standardized tests have two answer choices that are blatantly wrong. When I do review questions with my students I make them eliminate two answer choices first before they can tell me a correct answer." less...
