"I have been tutoring since high school, and I still enjoy tutoring now that I am retired! It is an awesome feeling to help a student who has been struggling with a problem or concept to "get it".
For most of my career I have used math, physics, and statistics to solve real-world problems. This allows me to bring a lot of practical experience to tutoring, in addition to a purely academic one. That said, I do have a strong academic background as well, including a PhD in physics from Caltech. During my time in physics I taught several courses and summer programs in physics, ranging from introductory physics to more advanced topics. After completing my PhD, I briefly worked as a physics professor and instructor, but then moved into quantitative finance. During my 30-year career in quantitative finance I used math and statistics to identify potential biases in hiring and compensation practices, detect fraud, quantify interest rate and credit risk, and manage investment portfolios. A particularly important and enjoyable aspect of my work involved explaining sophisticated quantitative concepts to audiences with no or little technical training.
My tutoring philosophy is to identify and overcome any mental blocks students may have understanding the material. This helps students not only get through challenging assignments and tests, but also strengthens their quantitative reasoning abilities that they can then apply to many real-life practical situations in the future!
I am passionate about breaking down seemingly complex problems into intuitive, bite-sized pieces. So, if that is something that appeals to you, please contact me!" less...
