"Hi! I’m Michael. I graduated from Northwestern University with degrees in History and Economics, and I also spent 2 years at NYU prior to transferring. Throughout my collegiate experience, I realized how much of a difference a knowledgeable, student-focused instructor can make, and this led to the creation of my own teaching philosophy: teach the student, not just the academic subject matter. A good teacher should be able to break down difficult concepts into simple terms while tailoring their lessons to each individual student’s learning style, and I aim to bring this approach to those I work with.
My teaching style is simple. Upon meeting a new student, I’ll begin with a brief consultation—during this time, I’ll get to know the student personally, get a feel for their goals, and determine how to structure their tutoring so that everything is geared towards their academic needs. From there, I’ll review their material with them using a hands-on, interactive style so that I can identify the gaps in their topical knowledge. I then use various means to teach the desired material explicitly, ranging from one-on-one lectures, active verbal discussions, and practice problems. I also provide study resources in between classes so students can continue learning on their own.
I’m well versed in math, English, science, and history, and have helped numerous students excel in these subjects at the high school and college levels, though I specialize in test prep and college admissions. As a 99th percentile ACT and SAT scorer, I’ve helped hundreds of kids bump their scores over the 30 and 1500 marks on both tests respectively, and I’ve guided several high schoolers through the college admissions process, with many now attending top universities. I’m also one of Varsity Tutors’ top-rated tutors in the Kansas City area and have logged thousands of hours teaching online on their platform. I’m available all days of the week and will respond quickly, so feel free to get in touch with any questions or to book a lesson!" less...
