"Hello! My name is Excel and I’m hoping to be your Bioinformatics tutor. After getting my undergraduate from the University of California, Davis, where I tutored organic chemistry, I spent several years working for the Department of Nutrition and the FDA as a bioinformatician, creating tools and pipelines for a mouse genetics research, instructing PhD students and faculty in the use of high performance computing and statistical programming with R. I now work as a senior bioinformaticist for a global pharmaceutical company in their research and development branch, developing software and algorithms that help us understand viral and cancer genetics.
Teaching has always been my favorite part of my role in any of my jobs and I personally feel like bioinformatics is an in-demand field with too few ways to enter it. I hope to help students who want to become the next generation in bioinformatics.
I also have 3+ years as a professional Python developer who can teach the basics of object oriented programming and how Python is best used in bioinformatics.
Using the command line and understanding the infrastructure of the Linux terminal is a daunting task starting from zero. I’m a daily user that speaks it fluently (or at least knows exactly what to google) and can speak to topics that are immediately useful and important as a bioinformatician or just someone looking to break away from point-and-click computing.
I am also an expert in pipeline and analysis environment building - I.e. installing and configuring your command line workspace to maximize your effectiveness in building pipelines or analyzing data. Students who are at this stage of learning will benefit from my expertise is nextflow, conda, docker, SLURM, Azure DevOps, ssh, bash, and vim configuration, as well as a wide variety of common and powerful bioinformatics software.
If you or someone you know is interested in entering the field of bioinformatics, I want to hear from you!" less...
