"Hi I'm Pierce! I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering and a certificate in Engineering Management. While working full-time, I received my Master's Degree in Business Administration from Murray State University. Most of my professional experience focuses on engineering, project management, and operations management in huge manufacturing settings like steel plants and pipe making facilities.
What sets me apart from every other tutor is that I work well with all types of people to make complex things seem simple. I've learned that engineers are really smart, but that knowledge doesn't always translate well if you can't help others understand what you are trying to say. Your audience will simply get bored and lose interest...much like my daughter when I'm telling a bad joke!
As an "official" tutor, I probably have 1-2 years of experience. I helped middle school students with their homework while in college and as a parent I regularly help my daughter with her middle school homework. I always start with the homework that was assigned for the day. I give sufficient time for it to be completed and make myself available for questions. I ask all students to show their work on paper so that I can quickly assess where any misunderstanding first started. I allow students to walk me through their thought process and then reference their school notes so that I am able to reinforce what they are being taught in class. If there is still a gap, I will generate additional practice problems and use creative games and videos, to ease understanding. I recognize students have different learning styles, which is why I have developed a very flexible and relaxed teaching approach. I am able to help with test prep as well. I'll typically ask if the teacher has provided a study guide that we can use in addition to a review of any homework and quizzes that were assigned. With regular practice students math skills will improve and test scores will go up!" less...
