"Hello! I'm Asiyah, and I've spent the past six years working with K–12 students across a range of settings—one-on-one, online, and in classrooms, helping them build confidence, independence, and a genuine love of learning.
I've graduated from the University of California, Davis with dual BAs in Sociology and Psychology, and have a deep understanding of both subjects, and anything involving reading, writing and comprehension. I graduated Magna Cum Laude and held honors status for the years enrolled. I also hold a certificate in trauma informed teaching practices. My academic background includes a completed honors thesis in Sociology and experience with a variety of writing styles, including research-based writing, narrative, argumentative essays, and more.
As I have worked with students of varying ages I've developed and used many techniques to allow students to gain independence in their work and improve, where student understanding is the key. I believe that confidence and self-trust are essential when it comes to reading at any age, and incorporate that in my teaching practice. Engagement is also critical and every student is different, that is why I tailor each lesson to the individual student and their needs. I've previously worked with students that had fallen behind their grade level, and worked diligently with them until they caught up again. In each lesson I try to focus on both academics and creating a welcoming space for students. I know what it feels like to be a teacher and student, and try to reflect that appreciation in every lesson.
My specialty focuses on any subjects involving reading and comprehension, including (but not limited to) history, ethnic studies, public speaking, English, literature and journalism. For each age group (and particular student), I highlight different concepts for younger students I focus on foundational skills and for older students I focus more on adaption and implementation; always leaving breathing room for the student to articulate their needs!" less...
