"¡Hola! I am a former middle and high school Spanish with 6 years of classroom experience and 9 years of tutoring experience. I earned a B.A. in Spanish from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2017 and a Master's in Library and Information Science in 2021.
As a student, I spent 6 months living in Spain. I attended la Universidad de Sevilla, lived with a host family, and made many Spanish-speaking friends. As a teacher, I had the wonderful experience of leading an exchange program to Madrid with students from our Spanish Honors Society!
The best way to learn a language is to use the target language in real-life situations. For this reason, I use a task-based approach when I teach Spanish. The task-based approach focuses heavily on interpersonal communication and paired learning through a variety of activities. These activities require students to think critically and problem solve, while still achieving specified linguistic goals. The task-based approach uses concrete steps to guide students through the manipulation of the target language and encourages them to use both their own cultural and linguistic knowledge to form connections. By structuring activities around interaction and problem-solving, students are required to use Spanish in a meaningful way, they are drawn out of their linguistic comfort zones, and there is automatically greater emphasis placed on their fluency.
I also firmly believe that fun/interesting experiences can make learning Spanish easier, and that they create a desire to learn more - which is why I make sure to integrate my students' own interests into my instruction. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you in all your language-learning endeavors!
