"I am a college student and special education para-educator currently going to school to get my teaching degree. I have been working with kids since I was a kid myself. I began tutoring when I was i high school, helping the younger kids in my neighborhood with their homework in exchange for help with chores or pocket money. This continued to develop into a small business while I was pursuing my undergraduate degree, however I had to abandon it due to some unforeseen family emergencies.
When I decided to get back into the teaching field I began to work at the after school program at Olive Pierce Middle School. During this time I discovered my love for teaching kids with special needs. Learning how these kids perceive the world and then crafting the lessons I teach to fit their needs is one of my favorite things to do, it is always a challenge, but a welcome one. Some of my favorite strategies include using the three learning modalities (auditory, kinesthetic, and visual) in all of my lessons, slowing things down and having frequent check-ins with my students to ensure they're keeping up, and employing many methods I use to help with my own neurodivergent tendencies to help the kids manage their own potentially disruptive behaviors.
After two years of working at the after school program, I took up another position at a nearby school in that same district, Ramona High School. Last year I began working there as a para-educator, which has given me even more experience helping kids with special needs and has firmly cemented my plans to become a teacher. I am now currently attending college to pursue this education and looking to get back into tutoring as a way to support myself while I finish my degree." less...
