"I'm a Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Albion College, I've dedicated my career to both teaching and innovative chemical research. Once a Professor Awesome finalist and a recipient of the Andy Kozak Faculty Contribution to Student Life Award at St. Mary's College, Dr. Streu's commitment to education is rooted in his own academic journey. He began at Albion College, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, summa cum laude, and was honored as the David L. Randall Outstanding Senior Chemistry Major. He went on to earn his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania, where his dissertation focused on the design of bioactive organometallic complexes. This was followed by an NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, researching chemical and biochemical methods for deconvoluting the inside-out integrin activation mechanism. After serving as an Assistant Professor at Maryland’s Public Honors College, Craig returned to his alma mater in service to his real goal: becoming an educator himself.
As a Professor at Albion, he teaches a broad curriculum including organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, general chemistry, honors science, and public health. He has also taken on administrative leadership as the Director of EPIIC Fellows and previously held a research appointment as a Visiting Associate Research Professor at the University of Michigan, College of Pharmacy. Dr. Streu's other passion is applying chemistry to improve human health, and he directs an active research group specializing in the design of light-activatable pharmaceuticals. This work leverages light to more precisely target drugs, a strategy aimed at reducing side effects for patients.
When not immersed in the world of science or mentoring students, Dr. Streu can be found hanging out with his family and their dog, or playing in the community soccer game he organizes." less...
